Open communication makes the difference

One thing after another

When Tracy and her two teenage children moved from Kansas North Carolina, she found herself going through a divorce, having to work a double shift, and then being smashed by a hurricane. Looking back, it was probably inevitable that her relationship with her teenage daughter would deteriorate.

"My daughter was being defiant, and she wasn't listening to me," says Tracy, whose daughter was starting to test the limits of what she was allowed to do and where she was allowed to go.

"She didn't understand my point of view, or why I wouldn't let her do certain things," says Tracy.

She saw the sign

Feeling helpless and frustrated, Tracy knew she needed to explore other avenues for parenting support and guidance.

After seeing a Triple P billboard, she made the decision to talk to a Teen Triple P provider to improve her relationship with Sierra.

Tracy was thrilled when she began seeing positive results so quickly.

"Triple P gave us the opportunity to look at things from one another's point of view," says Tracy, sharing that her daughter also valued the chance to share her perspective, as well as hearing her mom's. "Discussions with our provider have shown my kids a little more about where I'm coming from, and they've also helped me look at things through my kids' eyes as well."

Shared goals and open communication

Tracy's focus at home has now become setting household rules and appropriate consequences, and she's excited to be equipped with new techniques to handle issues such as rudeness and disrespect.

Working with Triple P provider Jennifer Bowers helped Tracy and her kids develop better ways to agree on things like the use of cell phones and the car as privileges that can be earned or lost, depending on behavior.

Although it's natural and normal for teenagers to test the limits at times, Tracy says her daughter is now much more open and honest with her.

Spreading the word

Tracy tells all her friends about the benefits of Triple P whenever she gets the chance.

"Whether you're struggling with discipline, schoolwork, or your kids aren't listening to you, it's wonderful to have a neutral, outside person that you can go to. I always tell my friends that Triple P can help you see things from a different point of view. It's really brought my kids and I closer together."
