School and home are back on track

Building a better future for her family

When Charlene's son, Isaiah, began acting out, she was worried, even though he was only five years old. She tried hard to help him, but as time went on and Isaiah's behavior became worse, Charlene felt overwhelmed. Luckily, she found out about Triple P.

A couple of years ago, this mom was at her wits' end. When her son was upset, he would throw things and break toys.

"He would ignore me when asked to clean up after himself," says Charlene. "He didn't want to do anything when it came to small chores he was responsible for."

And at school, there were problems too. To top it all off, things were getting more difficult at home and Charlene found herself a single mom.

By this time, she'd tried everything she could think of. "I was doing the best I could," she says.

Like many parents, Charlene says she'd sometimes found herself losing her temper with Isaiah because she found his behavior so hard to manage. So now, she really wants to guide her children not just effectively, but positively. She's also studying a Master of Marriage and Family Counseling, in order to help other people navigate difficult situations.

After working with a Triple P provider, Charlene started trying out some new strategies.

Firstly, she started to get down and talk to Isaiah on his level. Between work, study, and home, it had been easy to rush through conversations or call out instructions in a hurry.

"I take time to hear him now," Charlene says. "This change has been a major, major thing for us."

Secondly, she discovered that sports were a great outlet for Isaiah to burn off extra energy. Now he's doing soccer in the spring and basketball in the fall. Developing hobbies at home has helped, too. Isaiah and his siblings used to get on each other's nerves. Now, he works on his own activities and his creative side has emerged. Now Charlene loves to sit on the floor and share an activity with her kids.

Using Triple P techniques, says Charlene, has helped her be more patient with all three of her children and, as a result, she now has a better relationship with all of them. She also used Triple P strategies to help Isaiah improve his school behavior.

Isaiah is doing just fine in first grade, and overall, Charlene's amazed and excited that everything is so much better than it was before.

"If you would have seen him from last year to this, there is a huge difference," she says.
